The Đinh Nho clan
of Hương Sơn

Dòng họ Đinh Nho ở Hương Sơn, Hà Tĩnh

Seven family trees, from the 16th century to the present day — from the ancestral mother Hoàng Quý Thị and the founder Đinh Phúc Diên to today's generations, across the senior, younger, illustrious, Thanh Liên and Cương Gián branches, and the extended Đinh house.

After Đinh Tú Anh, Lịch sử dòng họ Đinh Nho (Phụ nữ Publishing, 2023); the Gia Phả 2000 (register directed by Đinh Nho Quỳ); the dissertation of Nguyễn Văn Sô (Univ. of Vinh, 2008); and complementary sources (press, annals, Đinh clan portals). A compilation document — uncertain links are flagged as such.

Gia phả · Family tree

Dòng họ Đinh Nho Global tree — generations 1 to 8 · the trunk and the four branches

Line founded at An Ấp (formerly tổng Yên Ấp; today the commune of An Hòa Thịnh), district of Hương Sơn, Hà Tĩnh. From the founder Đinh Phúc Diên (arrived c. 1530–1546) up to the 8th generation, where the line branches into four chi (branches).

Clan couplet (Đinh Nho Thanh, 16th gen.) — whence the jade and gold of this tree.
✦ Phúc thần Canonized Trung Đẳng Thần ◆ Sử liệu Attested (official histories, steles) ○ Gia phả Clan source ⚠ Dị bản Divergence between sources « Đời » = generation

This tree lays out the founding structure of the clan. For six generations the line is « độc đinh » — a single male heir per generation. At the 7th generation, Doctor Đinh Nho Công breaks this single line and inaugurates the scholarly tradition (khoa bảng): his six sons give rise, at the 8th generation, to four branches that will continue down to the 20th–21st generations. Backbone: the book of Đinh Tú Anh (2023); corroborated by web sources and the clan forum; divergences flagged.

The single-son trunk — generations 1 to 6

« Từ cụ thủy tổ đến đời thứ 6 họ ta độc đinh » — a single male heir per generation. All trained in letters (tứ trường), without yet reaching the doctorate.

The four branches (chi)

Issuing from the 8th generation, they continue down to the 20th–21st generations. These are the four trees to be developed next.

Chi trưởng — senior branch

Founder: Đinh Nho Trạch (8th gen.)

Sơn Hòa / An Hòa Thịnh (Hương Sơn). Line of the clan heads (tộc trưởng).

→ continues: Đinh Nho Thực (9th) → Đinh Nho Tể (10th) → … → 20th–21st gen.

Chi thứ — younger branch

Founder: Đinh Nho Thận (8th gen.)

Sơn Hòa, then Sơn Châu & Sơn Tân (Hương Sơn). Common worship at the ancestral house (đại tôn).

→ includes the Sơn Tân branch (Xa Lang), whence the historian Đinh Xuân Lâm.

Chi Cương Gián

Founder: Đinh Nho Thường (8th gen.)

Cương Gián, Nghi Xuân (Hà Tĩnh), via Can Lộc.

→ genealogy reconnected to the mother line on 14 Apr 2022 (work of Mr Đinh Quang Tích).

Chi Thanh Liên

Thanh Liên, Thanh Chương (Nghệ An).

→ produces the Tiến sĩ-poet Đinh Nhật Thận (11th gen.). Reconstitution and copying of the gia phả in 1838, then in 2010.

Sources

  • Backbone — Đinh Tú Anh, Lịch sử dòng họ Đinh Nho (clan book, 2023): names, dates, offices, worship days (giỗ), tombs, table of clan heads.
  • Corroboration — the « Họ Đinh Nho ở Hương Sơn » thread of the Họ Đinh Việt Nam forum (hodinhvietnam.com), articles in Báo Hà Tĩnh, Văn hóa Nghệ An; doctors' steles of the Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám (1670, 1700); mention of Đinh Nho Hoàn's mission in the Cương mục and the Đại Việt sử ký tục biên.

Divergences to be settled (on primary sources)

  • Ages, gen. 2 & 3 — 2023 book: Trường 60, Bảo 73; forum: Trường 93, Bảo 60. (The other ages agree.)
  • Origin of Cương Gián — descent from Đinh Nho Thường, 8th gen. (2023 book) vs brother of the founder (forum). The gia phả of Cương Gián will settle it.
  • Death of Đinh Nho Hoàn — « 1715 » (departure on mission, Ất Mùi) vs « 1716 » (death, 27/12 lunar). Birth 1671 certain — the « 1670 » seen elsewhere is erroneous.
  • Title of the founder — « Tả Hiệu Điểm, Công Tây Hầu » attributed to Đinh Phúc Diên (forum); a list in the 2023 book seems to attribute it to the brother Phúc Tiên. To be verified.

Still to be integrated

  • The individual entries of the Gia Phả 2000 (scanned PDF) — to be recovered by visual reading where OCR failed, to enrich each generation (wives, children, dates).
  • The detail of generations 9 to 21 of each branch (next step).

Global tree, generations 1–8 · first version, to be enriched. « Đời » = generation. The days of worship (giỗ) follow the lunar calendar.

The tree reads from top to bottom: the golden disc carries the generation number (đời), the card gives the clan head, his wife or wives, then his children — the heir (★) taking up the vertical thread. The 13th–15th generations left no dates in the gia phả (flagged). The illustrious branch (the scholars Điển and Quang, the ancestress of Đặng Thai Mai) breaks off at the 13th generation.

A note on branches A and B

In the genealogy, the codes « A » and « B » distinguish the two chi (branches) of the clan — not sub-branches of one same line.

A = senior branch (chi trưởng) · B = younger branch (chi thứ). The figures once attached here as « sub-branch B » — the master Đinh Nho Lệ, the patriots Đinh Doãn Tế and Đinh Nho Bộc, and the line of the author Đinh Tú Anh — in fact belong to the younger branch, now treated in its own tree. The scholars Đinh Nho Quang and Đinh Nho Điển, by contrast, are indeed of the senior branch (through their father Đinh Nho Tĩnh, 5th son of the clan head Đinh Thái Lãng), as the 13th generation above has shown.

What reading the Gia Phả 2000 made it possible to establish

  • The complete father → son chain from the 7th to the 19th generation, with for each head his taboo name (húy), his wife and his children — the tree ceases to be a mere list.
  • The attachment of the illustrious branch — the son Hy Tăng of Đinh Thái Lãng (12th gen.) is indeed the « Đinh Nho Tặng » / Đinh Nho Tĩnh of the 13th gen. (entry 13A5), father of the Tiến sĩ Điển, of the Tuần phủ Quang and of the ancestress of Đặng Thai Mai.
  • The families of the recent heads — wives and children of the 16th (Đoàn Thị Kiều), 17th (Võ Thị Tùng) and 18th (Thái Thị Sâm) generations, up to the current head.

Divergences noted between the two sources

  • Tomb of Đinh Nho Công (7th) — Lăng Kim Hoa (2023 book) vs xứ Cây Hóp, Sơn Phúc (Gia Phả 2000).
  • Tomb of Đinh Nho Hành (16th) — Đồng Mậu (2023 book) vs Áng Phần (Gia Phả 2000).
  • Death of Đinh Nho Liên (17th) — the gia phả hesitates between Ất Dậu (1945) and Bính Tuất (1946); the 2023 table retains 1946.

Gia phả · The illustrious branch

Quang, Điển and their posterity Descendants of Đinh Nho Tĩnh (13th gen.) — two scholars, an ancestress, and the academics of today

At the 13th generation, a younger son of the senior branch — Đinh Nho Tĩnh — fathers the three figures who will make the clan's renown: the Tuần phủ Đinh Nho Quang, the doctor Đinh Nho Điển, and Đinh Thị Hoan, whose line leads to Đặng Thai Mai and to General Võ Nguyên Giáp.

This tree follows these three offshoots, then the constellation of modern academics of the Đinh Nho clan (16th–18th generations). The precise attachment of each academic to Quang or Điển is not always recorded in the gia phả; what is documented is indicated as such, the rest being presented as the radiance of the senior branch as a whole.

Honesty about attachments. Only Đinh Nho Hân (chemist) is explicitly presented by the genealogy as a descendant of Điển. For most other modern academics, the source gives the generation but not the precise ancestry up to Quang or Điển; they appear here as the radiance of the senior branch. The known links (Đinh Nho Liêm → Đinh Dũng; Đinh Nho Huề → Quỳnh Dao and Đinh Phạm Thái) are flagged.

Gia phả · Younger branch (Chi thứ — code « B »)

The younger branch Đinh Nho Thận (8th gen.) — and the line that wrote the clan's history

Đinh Nho Công had two wives, both of the Đặng clan. The eldest son of the first founds the senior branch (Trạch); the eldest son of the second, Đinh Nho Thận, founds the younger branch. Both remain at Hương Sơn and share the ancestral house (nhà thờ đại tôn) — whence, in the gia phả, the codes A (senior) and B (younger).

The best-documented line of this branch is, remarkably, that of the 2023 book's author, Đinh Tú Anh (17B): a succession of teachers, and, collaterally, two patriots of the early 20th century. It is also this branch that, by the pen of its descendant, recorded all the history these trees retrace.

Notes on the branch

Two branches, one house

Senior and younger descend from the same Đinh Nho Công, through his two wives; both remained at Hương Sơn, they honour their ancestors at the same nhà thờ đại tôn. The younger branch had its own small worship house at Đông Mỹ, sold around 1948 during the policy of grouping the cults.

Teachers and patriots

The branch is distinguished by a vocation for teaching (the master Đinh Nho Lệ) and by the patriotic commitment of the early 20th century: the Đông Du martyr Đinh Doãn Tế and the Côn Đảo prisoner Đinh Nho Bộc.

The branch that told its own story

A notable fact: it is a son of the younger branch, Đinh Tú Anh (17B), who wrote in 2023 the history of the whole clan. The chi thứ is thus the hand that holds the brush of this genealogy.

Correction. In the genealogy, the code « B » designates precisely the younger branch (the book labels its table « Chi trưởng (A) / Chi thứ (B) »). Several figures presented earlier as « sub-branch B of the senior branch » — the master Đinh Nho Lệ, the patriots Đinh Doãn Tế and Đinh Nho Bộc, and the author's line — in fact belong to this younger branch. This is their rightful place. (The scholars Quang and Điển, however, remain of the senior branch, via Đinh Nho Tĩnh.)

Limits of this tree

  • The 10th–12th generations of the branch, and the continuation of its own heads (tộc trưởng chi thứ), are not named in my sources: the line detailed here is the author's sub-line, not necessarily that of the heads of the younger branch.
  • Đinh Doãn Tế and Đinh Nho Bộc are placed at the 15th generation of the younger branch; their precise attachment to the author's sub-line is not established (they are its collaterals).

Gia phả · Thanh Liên branch (Thanh Chương, Nghệ An)

The founder and the poet Đinh Nho Côn (8th gen.) · and his great-grandson Đinh Nhật Thận (11th gen.)

One of the four branches from Doctor Đinh Nho Công. His youngest son, Đinh Nho Côn, soldier and scholar, leaves Hương Sơn for Thanh Chương (Nghệ An) and founds the Thanh Liên offshoot there. Three generations below is born the poet Đinh Nhật Thận, one of the great voices of 19th-century Vietnamese literature.

This branch is rich in figures but sparse in genealogy: the Gia Phả 2000 of Hương Sơn did not catalogue the Thanh Chương offshoot, and the two intermediate generations remain unknown to my sources. The tree below is therefore honest about its gaps, and deploys instead the portrait of the two attested figures.

Đinh Nhật Thận

1815 – 1866 · 51 years
丁日慎 · tự Tử Quý (var. Tử Úy) · hiệu Bạch Mao Am — « the hermitage of the white thatched roof »

Born at Thanh Liêu (today the commune of Thanh Tiên, Thanh Chương, Nghệ An), renowned for his intelligence and memory, he receives in 1838 the title of doctor — first in his category at the metropolitan examination (Minh Mệnh 19), at 23. Named tri phủ, he is then dismissed for obscure reasons; reinstated in 1843, he declines, citing illness. A free spirit, he devotes himself to medicine, poetry and friendship, and becomes intimately close to Cao Bá Quát and Nguyễn Hàm Ninh.

After the Mỹ Lương uprising led by Cao Bá Quát (1854), he is implicated and closely watched. Knowing his immense learning, Emperor Tự Đức keeps him at the palace — to better control him, and for him to teach the imperial grandsons. There, secluded and consumed by nostalgia, one autumn night, drinking alone, he composes in a single stroke the Thu dạ lữ hoài ngâm. The work reaches the sovereign who, admiring his talent and uprightness, pardons him.

Returning home, he teaches until his death in 1866.

Thu dạ lữ hoài ngâm

秋夜旅懷吟 · « The traveller's autumn night lament »

One hundred and forty verses in classical Chinese, cast in the song thất lục bát — a purely Vietnamese metre, a striking choice for a work in hán. It is the song of a man detained without cause at the heart of the capital, whose heart remains « empty, frozen and alien », turned entirely toward his village and his own. It is this lament that inscribed his name in Vietnam's literary history — to the point that a tradition holds the author himself translated it into nôm.

« Lờ mờ đêm nguyệt trời sương,
Thuyền ai tưởng khách non Hàn, lại không! » — excerpt from the Vietnamese version (public domain work, 19th c.)

Notes on the branch

A land of learning

Thanh Liên / Thanh Tiên, at Thanh Chương (Nghệ An), is renowned as « đất học » — a land of scholars: it counted many examination laureates who then put their knowledge at the service of the people.

The link to the ancestral cult

Though settled in Nghệ An, the founder Đinh Nho Côn remains linked to the mother house: canonized Phúc thần, he is honoured at the Gôi Vị temple of Hương Sơn, alongside the clan's other sacred figures.

A question of name

The Hương Sơn trunk bears the name « Đinh Nho »; this Thanh Chương offshoot produced the form « Đinh Nhật » (Đinh Nhật Thận). The local genealogy, due to the poet, remains the key to tracing these generations.

Note on dates. The 2023 book reproduces a forum text giving « 1815 – 1886 ». The Vietnamese Wikipedia and literary histories retain 1815 – 1866 (died at 51, « hưởng dương 51 tuổi »): this is the date followed here, « 1886 » being a typo propagated online.

Limits of this tree

  • The 9th and 10th generations of the branch (between Đinh Nho Côn and Đinh Nhật Thận) do not appear in my sources, nor does the poet's descent: the Gia Phả 2000 of Hương Sơn does not cover the Thanh Chương offshoot.
  • A genealogy specific to Thanh Liên, compiled by Đinh Nhật Thận himself, is mentioned by the 2023 book: this would be the source to use to complete this offshoot.

Gia phả · Cương Gián branch (Nghi Xuân, Hà Tĩnh)

The rediscovered branch The Cương Gián offshoot, separated from the trunk around 1700, reconnected in 2013

At Cương Gián (Nghi Xuân), there is only one Đinh clan, keeping the memory of a « great mandarin » ancestor. For generations, its origin remained an enigma — until a patient inquiry (2008–2013) linked it to the Đinh Nho clan of Sơn Hòa, at Hương Sơn.

The attachment of this branch to the trunk long « caused debate »: its tree jumps directly from the 7th generation to an anonymous local founder. This dossier recounts the quest for reconnection, sets out the reasoning that identified the founder, and clearly distinguishes what is confirmed from what remains a hypothesis.

The line, as it is reconstructed

ĐỜI7
Đinh Nho Công 1637 – 1695 · common root
The doctor of 1670. The two gia phả — that of Cương Gián and that of Sơn Hòa — coincide exactly from the 1st to the 7th generation: this is the proven basis of the kinship.
ĐỜI8
Founder of the Cương Gián branch
Đinh Nho Thường « Đinh Đại Lang » ~1678 – 1680 · 4th son of Đinh Nho Công
Younger brother of the Hoàng giáp Đinh Nho Hoàn. Leaves Hương Sơn (≈ after 1700), passes through Thuần Thiện (Can Lộc), then founds the Đinh clan of Cương Gián (≈ before 1740).
⚠ His real name is not recorded in the Cương Gián genealogy, which names him only « Đinh Đại Lang » (the Elder). The identification as Đinh Nho Thường is a reasoned deduction (see below), not a certainty.
ĐỜI9·10
Two generations unnamed
The Cương Gián genealogy counts its own generations from the local founder, without recording the names of those who left Hương Sơn.
ĐỜI11
The keystone of dating
Đinh Nguyễn Đôn Hương cống 1759 · great-grandson of the founder
Passed at the Kỷ Mão session (Cảnh Hưng 19, 1759), then Tham tri of châu Bố Chính (Quảng Bình region). His name, his village (Cương Gián) and his examination year are attested by the national annals (Các nhà khoa bảng, Dư địa chí Nghi Xuân) — from which the dating of the whole branch is traced back.
ĐỜI~20
Thirteen generations at Cương Gián
From « Đinh Đại Lang » to today, the offshoot counts 13 generations — that is, aligning with the trunk (8 + 13 − 1), the 20th–21st generation, exactly the level reached at Sơn Hòa. Two worship houses: the senior branch at Trung Sơn, the younger at Song Long.

The inquiry: finding the trunk (2008–2013)

Account by Đinh Quang Tích, of the Đinh clan of Cương Gián, who led the research and published it on the Họ Đinh Việt Nam portal.

before
A family legend

Oral tradition describes the founder as a great mandarin: at major ceremonies, offerings were laid out in the courtyard for dozens of guards and horses escorting the ancestor. Elders had searched for the origin, in vain.

2008
The first clue

The preface of the genealogy (Trung Sơn branch) reveals ancestors coming from Gia Viễn (Ninh Bình), settled at « An Ấp » and « Cổ Ngu », and two doctors, father and son, under the Lê. An Ấp is identified as Sơn Hòa (Hương Sơn) and Cổ Ngu as Đức Thọ.

2009
A false trail

Visit to the Đinh clan of Trung Lương (Đức Thọ): similar origins (Gia Viễn → An Ấp / Cổ Ngu, two doctors father and son), but no direct link can be established. Disappointment.

2011
The providential portal

In August, the author discovers the Họ Đinh Việt Nam site and publishes his appeal there. A few days later, the tộc trưởng Đinh Nho Quỳ (Sơn Hòa) contacts him by email and sends him a copy of the Hương Sơn genealogy.

2013
The reconnection

On the day of Rằm Tháng Bảy, the Đinh of Cương Gián bring their gia phả to Sơn Hòa for an official comparison. The two registers coincide from the 1st generation (Đinh Phúc Diên) to the 7th (Đinh Nho Công) — names, wives' clans, titles. The kinship is established.

How the founder was identified

A four-step deduction

The kinship with Sơn Hòa being proven, it remained to determine who, at the 8th generation, had carried the name as far as Cương Gián. Since the gia phả does not name him, reasoning was required.

1
A dated descendant: Đinh Nguyễn Đôn, received at the examination in 1759, attested by the annals.
2
He is the great-grandson of the founder → the founder's birth calculated around 1678-1680.
3
This age makes him a younger brother of the Hoàng giáp Đinh Nho Hoàn (b. 1671) — therefore a son of Đinh Nho Công.
4
Among the sons who left for distant parts, only Đinh Nho Thường (the 4th) remained « without known descent » and old enough: it is he.

Notes on the branch

One clan, two worship houses

Cương Gián has only ever had one Đinh clan, divided into two offshoots: the senior branch (chi anh) at Trung Sơn, the younger (chi em) at Song Long.

Proof by the generations

Thirteen generations at Cương Gián, plus the seven of the trunk, give the 20th — precisely the current level of Sơn Hòa. This alignment powerfully supports the kinship.

The detour via Can Lộc

The Hương Sơn genealogy says Đinh Nho Thường left for Thuần Thiện (Can Lộc) — a region bordering Cương Gián, separated by a single ridge, whence daily marriages and commerce: a natural relay before permanent settlement.

Confirmed vs hypothesis. What is established by comparing the registers: the Đinh of Cương Gián descend from the Đinh Nho clan of Sơn Hòa (concordance of the first 7 generations). What remains a reasoned hypothesis (of the author himself, who speaks of « giả thuyết đáng tin »): the precise identity of the founder as Đinh Nho Thường, 4th son of Đinh Nho Công — the local gia phả not preserving his real name. The author hopes that, in the future, science (DNA) will lift the last doubts.

To note

  • The Cương Gián offshoot also uses the form « Đinh Nguyễn » (Đinh Nguyễn Đôn); its founder is designated locally only by « Đinh Đại Lang ».
  • The same inquiry ruled out two neighbouring leads: the Đinh clan of Trung Lương (Đức Thọ) and that of Thuần Thiện (Can Lộc), without any direct link established with Cương Gián.

The extended Đinh house · above the Đinh Nho clan

The brothers' branches The mother Hoàng Quý Thị and the lines of her other sons: Nghi Long, Đức Thủy, Hàm Giang

Đinh Phúc Diên, founder of the Đinh Nho, was not alone: he had three brothers, sons of one mother, Hoàng Quý Thị. Each founded his own Đinh line. Here are their trees, insofar as the sources document them.

For each branch, the tree follows what is attested — often the spine of an illustrious line rather than a complete survey. Two branches (Nghi Long, Đức Thủy) are solidly linked to the common trunk; that of Hàm Giang remains contested, and the tree honestly presents both rival versions.

The ancestral mother

Tổ mẫu · the common matriarch
♀ Hoàng Quý Thị

Mother of the four Đinh brothers, descendants of General Đinh Điền (924–979). In 1527, fleeing the Mạc usurpation, she makes her way with her sons to the hamlet of Thu Lũng (today Nghi Thu, Cửa Lò). She drowns there while washing clothes; a storm covers her tomb with a great mound — « buried by Heaven », it is said, and held most sacred. Her sons then disperse into four lines.

2nd brother — Nghi Long, họ Đinh Văn

His brother Đinh Văn Uyển was the teacher of Phan Bội Châu.
ĐỜI11
Đinh Văn Chấp 1882 – 1953 · Hoàng giáp
Younger son of Đinh Văn Chất. As a child, narrowly escapes the massacre, goes into exile in China (Fujian), returns in 1898 and passes the second-rank doctorate (Hoàng giáp) in 1913. 4th generation of laureates of the branch.

4th of the 11 children of the Hoàng giáp Đinh Văn Chấp. First Vietnamese doctor in Buddhist studies (Nālandā, India), rector of Vạn Hạnh University, translator of the Pali canon (Nikāya) into Vietnamese.

A remarkable parallel: like the Đinh Nho with the Tiến sĩ Đinh Nho Công and his son the Hoàng giáp Đinh Nho Hoàn, the Nghi Long branch offers two doctors, father and son — Đinh Văn Chất and Đinh Văn Chấp. It is by a couplet of the latter, offered to the Đinh Nho house, that the common origin was reaffirmed (Gia Viễn / Hoan–Ái / Hồng–Lam).

4th brother — Hàm Giang, họ Đinh

⚠ Contested

The 4th brother, Đinh Phúc An, set off again toward the North. The Đinh Văn of Nghi Long call him the ancestor of the Đinh clan of Hàm Giang (today Hải Dương) — that of the famous General Đinh Văn Tả. But the two clans tell irreconcilable stories: here are the two versions.

Version of Nghi Long (stele of the 4 brothers)

  1. Đinh Phúc An (4th brother, younger than Phúc Tiên born in 1477) — sent to the North.
  2. Military general Đinh Văn Phủ — died in battle at Hải Dương in 1600.
  3. General Đinh Văn Tả (born 1599) — that is, the descendant at the 4th generation of Phúc An.

Version of Hàm Giang (annals, 1891 & 1936)

  1. Thái bảo Thạch Quận công Đinh Đàm (~1365; joins Lê Lợi in 1418).
  2. Đinh Phúc An (attachment to Đàm uncertain).
  3. Đức Giang Hầu (son of Phúc An; actor in the 1460 coup → therefore born before ~1440).
  4. Đô đốc Dương Sơn hầu Đinh Đam.
  5. Thái bảo Hùng Quận công Đinh Phủ (died ~1600, at Yên Trường / Thanh Hóa).
  6. Lộc Quận công Đinh Văn Tả (born 1599) — descendant at the 5th generation of Phúc An.

The contradiction. If Phúc An is indeed the 4th brother (younger than Phúc Tiên, born in 1477), he cannot have a son — Đức Giang Hầu — already active in the coup d'état of 1460: that would put his birth before 1420, that is, a generation before his eldest brother. The two accounts also diverge on the death of Đinh Phủ (Hải Dương vs Thanh Hóa) and on the rank of Đinh Văn Tả (4th or 5th generation). For want of proof, the link is not established — hence two meetings between clan heads (2014, 2018) that reached no conclusion. A single point commands the unanimity of the four lines: descent from General Đinh Điền.

In the margin — the Đinh clan of Trung Lương

To be distinguished from the brothers. The Đinh clan of Trung Lương (today Hồng Lĩnh, Hà Tĩnh) is not a brothers' branch, but — according to the book — an offshoot of the Đinh Nho clan itself, detached around the 3rd generation (an episode omitted by the Hương Yên gia phả, which records only a single-son line from the 1st to the 7th generation). Founded by an ancestor with the literary name Thuấn Phác, strong with 16 generations (~1,000 descendants) and the tradition of the blacksmith, it was linked to the trunk by the scholar Đinh Nho Tùng (11th gen.), who came to copy the gia phả of the Đinh Nho.
Confirmed vs contested. Three lines — Đinh Nho (Hương Sơn), Đinh Văn (Nghi Long) and Đinh (Đức Thủy) — recognize themselves as issuing from the four brothers, to the point of forbidding marriages between them, and created in 2017 a common liaison committee. The fourth, the Đinh clan of Hàm Giang, remains unlinked for lack of concordant accounts.

Open questions

  • The given name of the 3rd brother (Đức Thủy) is lost.
  • The trees of Nghi Long and Đức Thủy are given by their illustrious lines; the generation-by-generation detail of all the families is not in my sources.
  • For Hàm Giang, the two versions are chronologically incompatible: the link remains a claim, not an established fact.
