The Đinh Nho clan
of Hương Sơn
Dòng họ Đinh Nho ở Hương Sơn, Hà Tĩnh
Seven family trees, from the 16th century to the present day: from the ancestral mother Hoàng Quý Thị and the founder Đinh Phúc Diên to today's generations, through the senior and younger branches, the descendants of Đinh Nho Tĩnh, the Thanh Liên and Cương Gián branches, and the clans descended from the founder's brothers.
Gia phả · Family tree
The trunk and the four branches Overall tree — generations 1 to 8
Clan established at An Ấp (formerly the canton of Yên Ấp), in the district of Hương Sơn (Hà Tĩnh); the hamlet now belongs to the commune of Sơn Tiến.1 From the founder Đinh Phúc Diên, who arrived around 1543–1546 or around 1530 ⚠︎, to the 8th generation, where the clan divides into four branches (chi).2
This tree presents the founding structure of the clan. According to the sources, the first generations had only one son as heir (“độc đinh”), for six or seven generations ⚠︎.4 At the 7th generation, Đinh Nho Công is the first doctor of the clan; his six sons give rise, at the 8th generation, to four branches that continue down to the 20th–21st generations.5
The single-son trunk — generations 1 to 6
“Từ cụ thủy tổ đến đời thứ 6 họ ta độc đinh” — “from the founder to the 6th generation, our clan had only one male heir”. Each generation passed the regional examinations, without reaching the doctorate.6
The branching — generation 8
The six sons of Đinh Nho Công, grouped by mother. Four founded a branch; two had no male descent, one of them the Hoàng giáp Đinh Nho Hoàn.17
The four branches (chi)
Issuing from the 8th generation, they continue down to the 20th–21st generations. These are the four trees to be developed next.
Chi trưởng — senior branch
Founder: Đinh Nho Trạch (8th gen.)
Hương Sơn (successively the communes of Sơn Hòa, An Hòa Thịnh and Sơn Tiến). Line of the clan heads (tộc trưởng).
→ continues: Đinh Nho Thực (9th) → Đinh Nho Tể (10th) → … → 20th–21st gen.
Chi thứ — younger branch
Founder: Đinh Nho Thận (8th gen.)
Sơn Hòa, then Sơn Châu & Sơn Tân (Hương Sơn). Shared worship at the ancestral house (đại tôn).
→ descendants of both branches settled at Sơn Châu and at Sơn Tân (Xa Lang), where the historian Đinh Xuân Lâm was born; his generation is not known.28
Chi Cương Gián
Founder: Đinh Nho Thường (8th gen.)
Cương Gián, Nghi Xuân (Hà Tĩnh), via Can Lộc.
→ recognised by the clan in 2013; ceremonial copying of the genealogy on 14/4/2022 (research by Đinh Quang Tích).29
Chi Thanh Liên
Founder: Đinh Nho Côn (8th gen.)
Thanh Liên, Thanh Chương (Nghệ An).
→ includes the doctor and poet Đinh Nhật Thận (11th generation). A photocopy of the branch's genealogy was given to the clan in 2010.30

- Origin of Cương Gián — Đinh Nho Thường, 8th generation (ĐTA 2023); brother of the founder (GP2020, part A).
- Death of Đinh Nho Hoàn — 1714, 1715 or 1716; day: 28th of the 12th month (HYPT), the 27th being the date of the Qing funeral oration. Birth: 1671 (HYPT); “1670” in an article reproduced by GP2020 [Phần D § 10] [sic].
- Title of the founder — the table of clan heads in ĐTA 2023 writes “Đinh Phúc Tiên” for Đinh Phúc Diên [sic] (ĐTA 2023 [French transl., p. 36]).
Overall tree, generations 1–8. “Đời” = generation. The days of worship (giỗ) follow the lunar calendar.
Gia phả · Chi trưởng — complete tree
The line of clan heads, complete Tộc trưởng · generations 7 to 19 — with wives and descendants at each generation
Reconstruction by primogeniture of the senior branch (chi trưởng), from the doctor Đinh Nho Công to the current clan head Đinh Hải Quân, based on the HYPT for generations 7 to 13 and on the Gia phả throughout, cross-checked with the 2023 book.1
The tree reads from top to bottom: the golden disc carries the generation number (đời), the card gives the clan head, his wife or wives, then his children, the heir (★) taking up the vertical thread. The sources consulted give no dates for the 13th to 15th generations. The descendants of Đinh Nho Tĩnh (Quang, Điển and Đinh Thị Hoan) branch off at the 13th generation.
The backbone, generation by generation
The transmission of the gia phả
The genealogy was drawn up, recopied, then translated by several members of the clan; some belong to the senior branch without having been clan heads.28
A chain of transmission
From the first register, lost to fire, to the modern version in quốc ngữ — then to the collection of the year 2000.
A clarification on branches A and B
In the gia phả, the codes “A” and “B” distinguish the two chi (branches) of the clan — not sub-branches of a single clan.
What the Gia phả makes it possible to establish
- The chain of clan heads, from father to son, from the 7th to the 19th generation, with each one's taboo name (húy), wife and children.36
- The attachment of Đinh Nho Tĩnh's descendants: Hy Tăng, son of Đinh Thái Lãng, is Đinh Nho Tĩnh (13th generation), father of Điển, Quang and Đinh Thị Hoan.37
- The families of the recent clan heads, up to the current head; data on living persons are kept for the members’ version.38
Divergences between the sources
- Tomb of Đinh Nho Công (7th) — Lăng Kim Hoa (ĐTA 2023); xứ Cây Hóp, Phúc Đậu, “now Sơn Phúc” (GP2010 [tr. 28–29]). It may be supposed that this is the same site; this is not established.
- Death of Đinh Nho Liên (17th) — Ất Dậu (1945) and Bính Tuất (1946) in GP2010 [tr. 80]; 1945 in the GP2020 entry [17A1]; 1946 in the GP2020 list of clan heads and in ĐTA 2023.

Gia phả · The descendants of Đinh Nho Tĩnh
Quang, Điển and their posterity Descendants of Đinh Nho Tĩnh (13th gen.) — Quang, Điển, Đinh Thị Hoan and their descendants
At the 13th generation, a younger son of the senior branch, Đinh Nho Tĩnh, is the father of the Tuần phủ Đinh Nho Quang, of the doctor Đinh Nho Điển and of Đinh Thị Hoan, whose Đặng descendants include Đặng Thai Mai and the wife of General Võ Nguyên Giáp.1
This tree follows these three lines of descent, then presents members of the clan from the 16th to the 18th generations cited in the 2023 book. The Gia phả attaches several of them to the descendants of Quang or of Điển; for the others, the source gives only the generation, and the tree says so.2
The fork, at the 13th generation
♀ The third column follows a maternal line (Đặng family), outside the Đinh Nho patrilineage: it descends from a daughter of the clan.
The recent generations of the Đinh Nho clan
The 2023 book lists, generation by generation, diplomats, officers and scientists of the clan, from branches A and B. For some of them the Gia phả specifies the filiation, which is given when it is known. For living people, only the name and the public role are given.17

Gia phả · Younger branch (Chi thứ — code “B”)
The younger branch Đinh Nho Thận (8th gen.) and his descendants
Đinh Nho Công had two wives, both of the Đặng clan. The eldest son of the first founded the senior branch (Trạch); the eldest son of the second, Đinh Nho Thận, founded the younger branch. Both branches remained at Hương Sơn and share the ancestral hall (nhà thờ đại tôn) — hence, in the gia phả, the codes A (senior) and B (younger).1
In the sources consulted, the most detailed line of this branch is that of Đinh Tú Anh (17B), author of the 2023 book: a succession of teachers. Two activists of the early 20th century belong to a collateral line.2
The branch, from the founder to Đinh Tú Anh
Key points on the branch
Two branches, one house
Senior and younger branches descend from the same Đinh Nho Công, through his two wives; having remained at Hương Sơn, they honour their ancestors at the same ancestral hall. The younger branch had its own worship house at Đông Mỹ, sold around 1948 ⚠︎ when the cults were regrouped.15
Teachers and activists
In this branch, the sources record a schoolmaster, Đinh Nho Lệ, and two activists of the early 20th century, Đinh Doãn Tế and Đinh Nho Bộc.
The author of the clan history
The clan history published in 2023 was written by a member of the younger branch, Đinh Tú Anh (17B).
Limits of this tree
- The list of heads of the younger branch (tộc trưởng chi thứ) is not given in the sources consulted; the line detailed here is that of Đinh Tú Anh, which is not necessarily that of the heads of the branch.
- Đinh Doãn Tế and Đinh Nho Bộc belong to a collateral line, descended from Đinh Nho Thành (9B1); that of Đinh Tú Anh descends from his brother Đinh Nho Ngụ (9B2).17

Gia phả · Thanh Liên branch (Thanh Chương, Nghệ An)
The founder and the poet Đinh Nho Côn (8th gen.) · and his great-grandson Đinh Nhật Thận (11th gen.)
One of the four branches descended from the doctor Đinh Nho Công. His sixth son, Đinh Nho Côn, soldier and scholar, left Hương Sơn for Thanh Chương (Nghệ An) and founded the Thanh Liên branch there. Three generations further down, the doctor and poet Đinh Nhật Thận was born.1
The documentation of this branch is incomplete: the intermediate generations between Đinh Nho Côn and Đinh Nhật Thận are not named in the entries below. The Gia phả of Hương Sơn does, however, contain mentions of Thanh Liêu and extracts from the branch's genealogy, still to be examined.2
The branch, from the trunk to the poet
Đinh Nhật Thận and the Thu dạ lữ hoài ngâm
Đinh Nhật Thận
1815 – 1866 ⚠︎ · aged 52 (51 completed years)Born at Thanh Liêu (today the commune of Thanh Tiên, Thanh Chương, Nghệ An), he was received as doctor (tiến sĩ) in 1838, at 24 (23 completed years), then appointed prefect (tri phủ). He was dismissed, then declined reinstatement on grounds of ill health ⚠︎; he devoted himself to medicine, poetry and teaching. He was a friend of Cao Bá Quát and of Nguyễn Hàm Ninh.9
Suspected of links with the Mỹ Lương uprising, led by Cao Bá Quát in 1854, he was arrested and taken to Huế. It was there that he wrote the Thu dạ lữ hoài ngâm. What followed varies with the sources ⚠︎: according to a 2010 article, Tự Đức kept him at the palace to teach the princes and pardoned him after reading the poem; according to Wikipedia, he was released shortly afterwards; according to the Gia phả, he was imprisoned after the execution of Cao Bá Quát.10
Having returned home, he taught until his death, in 1866 ⚠︎.11
Thu dạ lữ hoài ngâm
秋夜旅懷吟 · “A traveller's lament on an autumn night”
A poem of 136 or 140 lines ⚠︎ in Chinese characters, written in the Vietnamese metre song thất lục bát. It is the lament of a man detained in the capital, turned towards his village and his kin. The author also made a version of it in the national language.12
Thuyền ai tưởng khách non Hàn, lại không!” — excerpt from the Vietnamese version (public-domain work, 19th c.)13
Key points on the branch
A land of learning
Thanh Liên (today Thanh Tiên, Thanh Chương) is described as a “đất học”, a land of scholars.14
The link to the ancestral cult
Although settled in Nghệ An, Đinh Nho Côn remains attached to the parent house: he is honoured as phúc thần at the Gôi Vị temple, with Đinh Nho Công, Đinh Nho Hoàn and Phan Thị Viên.15
A question of name
The Hương Sơn trunk bears the name “Đinh Nho”; the Thanh Chương branch produced the form “Đinh Nhật” (Đinh Nhật Thận). The local genealogy, begun by the poet, remains the source to be examined for these generations.16
Limits of this tree
- The 9th and 10th generations of the branch (between Đinh Nho Côn and Đinh Nhật Thận), and the poet's descendants, are not named here; the Gia phả of Hương Sơn and its extracts from the Thanh Liêu genealogy are still to be examined.18
- The genealogy specific to Thanh Liên, begun by Đinh Nhật Thận, is the source to be used to complete this branch; a photocopy of it was given to the clan in 2010.19

Gia phả · Cương Gián branch (Nghi Xuân, Hà Tĩnh)
The rediscovered branch The Cương Gián branch, separated from the trunk around 1700, recognised in 2013
According to Đinh Quang Tích, there is only one Đinh clan at Cương Gián (Nghi Xuân), which keeps the memory of a “great mandarin” ancestor. Its origin long remained unknown, until research carried out from 2008 to 2013 linked it to the Đinh Nho clan of Hương Sơn.1
The Cương Gián genealogy passes directly from the 7th generation to a local founder known only by a single byname. This chapter retraces the research, sets out the reasoning that identified the founder, and distinguishes what is established from what remains a hypothesis.
The branch, as it is reconstructed
The inquiry: finding the trunk again (2008 – 2013)
Account by Đinh Quang Tích, of the Đinh clan of Cương Gián, who led the research and published it on the Họ Đinh Việt Nam portal.7
Oral tradition describes the founder as a great mandarin: at major ceremonies, offerings were laid out in the courtyard for dozens of guards and horses escorting the ancestor. Forebears had searched for the origin, in vain.
The preface of the gia phả (Trung Sơn branch) reveals ancestors who came from Gia Viễn (Ninh Bình), settled at “An Ấp” and “Cổ Ngu”, and two doctors, father and son, under the Lê. An Ấp is identified as Sơn Hòa (Hương Sơn), and Cổ Ngu as Đức Thọ.
Visit to the Đinh clan of Trung Lương (Đức Thọ): similar origins (Gia Viễn → An Ấp / Cổ Ngu, two doctors father and son), but no direct link is established.
In August, Đinh Quang Tích discovers the Họ Đinh Việt Nam site and posts his appeal there. A few days later, the clan head Đinh Nho Quỳ (Sơn Hòa) contacts him by email and sends him a copy of the Hương Sơn genealogy.8
On the day of Rằm Tháng Bảy, the Đinh of Cương Gián bring their gia phả to Sơn Hòa for an official comparison. The two registers coincide from the 1st generation (Đinh Phúc Diên) to the 7th (Đinh Nho Công) — names, wives’ clans, titles. The kinship is established.9
How the founder was identified
A deduction in four steps
With the kinship with the Sơn Hòa clan established by comparing the registers, it remained to find out which son of the 8th generation had gone to Cương Gián. As the genealogy does not name him, Đinh Quang Tích proceeds by deduction.
Key points on the branch
One clan, two halls
According to ĐTA 2023, Cương Gián has only one Đinh clan, divided into two branches: the senior (chi anh) at Trung Sơn, the younger (chi em) at Song Long.12
Counting the generations
Thirteen generations at Cương Gián, added to the seven of the trunk, give the 20th, the current level of the Sơn Hòa generations. This alignment is consistent with the kinship; it does not prove it on its own.
The detour through Can Lộc
The HYPT places Đinh Nho Thường's first stop at Can Lộc. Can Lộc borders Cương Gián.13
To note
- The Cương Gián branch also uses the form “Đinh Nguyễn” (Đinh Nguyễn Đôn); its founder is referred to locally only as “Đinh Đại Lang”.
- The same inquiry ruled out two neighbouring leads: the Đinh clan of Trung Lương (Đức Thọ) and that of Thuần Thiện (Can Lộc), with no direct link to Cương Gián established.

The extended Đinh house · above the Đinh Nho clan
The brothers’ branches The mother Hoàng Quý Thị and the clans of her other sons: Nghi Long, Đức Thủy, Hàm Giang
According to tradition, Đinh Phúc Diên, founder of the Đinh Nho, had brothers, sons of the same mother, Hoàng Quý Thị; their number varies according to the sources ⚠︎. Here are their clans, insofar as the sources document them.1
For each branch, the tree follows what is attested, often a line of laureates rather than a complete record. Two clans, those of Nghi Long and Đức Thủy, recognise themselves as kin of the Đinh Nho; the link of the Hàm Giang clan is claimed, not established, and the tree presents both versions.
The ancestral mother
According to tradition, the mother of the Đinh brothers, descendants of General Đinh Điền (924–979). In 1527, after the Mạc seized power, she makes her way with her sons to the hamlet of Thu Lũng (today Nghi Thu, Cửa Lò). She drowns there while washing clothes; a storm covers her tomb with a great mound, “buried by Heaven”, it is said. Her sons then disperse.2
2nd brother — Nghi Long, họ Đinh Văn
Founded by Đinh Phúc Tiên, who stayed near their mother's tomb. The clan counted several generations of laureates ⚠︎ and the monk Thích Minh Châu.3
↳ Like the Đinh Nho with Đinh Nho Công and his son Đinh Nho Hoàn, the Nghi Long clan counts two doctors, father and son, Đinh Văn Chất and Đinh Văn Chấp. A couplet by the latter, offered to the Đinh Nho ancestral hall, recalls the common origin (Hoan–Ái, Hồng–Lam).11
3rd brother — Đức Thủy, họ Đinh Trọng → Đinh Văn
Founded by the 3rd brother (whose given name has been lost) at Đông Khê, Cổ Ngu (today Đức Thủy, Đức Thọ). The clan takes the name Đinh Văn from the 9th generation onwards.
4th brother — Hàm Giang, họ Đinh
According to the Nghi Long genealogy, the fourth brother, Đinh Phúc An, set off again towards the North; the Đinh Văn say he is the ancestor of the Đinh clan of Hàm Giang (today Hải Dương), that of General Đinh Văn Tả. The two clans give incompatible accounts of this.16
Nghi Long version (stele of the 4 brothers)
- Đinh Phúc An (4th brother, younger than Phúc Tiên, who was born in 1477) — sent to the North.
- …
- Võ tướng Đinh Văn Phủ — killed in battle at Hải Dương in 1600.
- General Đinh Văn Tả (b. 1599) — that is, Phúc An's descendant in the 4th generation.
Hàm Giang version (chronicle of 1891, genealogy of 1936, Tri Tân 1943)
- Thái bảo Thạch Quận công Đinh Đàm (~1365; joined Lê Lợi in 1418).
- Đinh Phúc An (link to Đàm uncertain).
- Đức Giang Hầu (son of Phúc An; took part in the 1460 coup → therefore born before ~1440).
- Đô đốc Dương Sơn hầu Đinh Đam.
- Thái bảo Hùng Quận công Đinh Phủ (died ~1600, at Yên Trường / Thanh Hóa).
- Lộc Quận công Đinh Văn Tả (b. 1599) — Phúc An's descendant in the 5th generation.
The contradiction. If Phúc An is the fourth brother, younger than Phúc Tiên, who was born in 1477, he cannot have had a son, Đức Giang Hầu, already active in the coup d'état of 1460: he would have been born around 1420 at the latest. The accounts also diverge on the death of Đinh Phủ (Hải Dương or Thanh Hóa) and on the rank of Đinh Văn Tả (4th or 5th generation). The clan head Đinh Nho Quỳ and Đinh Gia Vĩnh, representative of the Hàm Giang clan, met in 2014 and in 2018; these meetings did not establish a link. All these accounts trace the clans back to Đinh Điền or to the house of Đinh Bộ Lĩnh.17
In the margin — the Đinh clan of Trung Lương
Limits of this tree
- The given name of the 3rd brother (Đức Thủy) is lost.
- The Nghi Long and Đức Thủy trees follow the lines of laureates; the details of all the families are not in the sources used.
- For Hàm Giang, the two versions are chronologically incompatible: the link remains a claim, not an established fact.
