Đinh Nho Hoàn
1671–1714/1716 ⚠︎ · Hoàng giáp (1700), vice-ambassador · 8th generation
Third son of Đinh Nho Công; pen name Mặc Trai. Received Hoàng giáp (doctor of the 2nd rank) at the examination of the Canh Thìn year, in 1700, he was military governor (Đốc trấn) of Cao Bằng from 1704 or 1705 ⚠︎ (D-T11). There he had the river cleared, formalities shortened and taxes reduced; in his lifetime the Chinese merchants raised a stele in his praise, the Đức chính bi. He was then Thượng bảo Tự khanh.
Vice-ambassador (Phó sứ) of the mission sent to the Qing in 1715, he died during the journey; the sources differ on the date (late 1715 or early 1716), on the place and on which leg of the journey ⚠︎ (D-H02, D-H10). Several papers of the 2015 colloquium connect this mission with the reduction of the tribute granted in 1716. He was posthumously promoted Tả thị lang, of the Ministry of Rites according to the HYPT and his tomb plaque ⚠︎ (D-T08), and raised to the title of Đặc Đạt Đại Vương, written “Đắc Đạt” on the plaque. His travel poems make up the Mặc Ông sứ tập ⚠︎ (D-T09). See the page “Đinh Nho Hoàn” in the Tutelary Deities section.
